Desired Characteristics

We’re looking for life-changing behavioral therapists with the following personal characteristics:

Adaptable — ABA therapy offers a slew of techniques to choose from.  Each child is different, and different times call for different approaches.  Adaptability means that the therapist will work with his or her BCBA to know when to employ each technique.  An adaptable therapist will also have the skill to manage behavior while creating a fun learning environment.

Passionate — Working with autism requires tremendous commitment and energy.  We are looking for therapists who see their work as more than a job; they should see it as a cause.  With this attitude, therapists can build lasting and positive relationships with the learner and their family.

Compassionate — Sometimes therapists can be so determined to see progress with a child that they forget that the learner is a person, a member of a family and of society.  Just like adults, children have good days and bad days; they have days when they are sick, or days when they are especially happy.  At times a child may be very motivated; other times he or she may be distracted or tired.  Therapists should recognize that the learner has a full school day, in addition to the additional therapy hours.  At it’s core, compassion is the ability to see the context behind a child’s presenting behavior.

Professional — Although we encourage our therapists to build positive, rewarding, long term relationships with the learner and their family, therapists must also have the professionalism to set appropriate boundaries.  This includes fundamental professionalism, such as reliability and timeliness, as well as balancing a professional-personal relationship; for example, proactively balancing friendly conversation with parents versus spending time working with their child.
